Swollen legs: causes and remedies
Swollen legs generally depend on a situation of water retention , i.e. from accumulation of liquids or from an infection derived from joint or tissue diseases or from traumas suffered.
In some cases, swollen legs can be associated with heart disease or blood clots.
If the swelling in the legs persists for a long time , medical advice is recommended. If, on the other hand, the disturbance can be attributed to breathing difficulties or fainting, it is advisable to go to the emergency room for checks.
Small daily tricks
-
Drink
lots of liquids during the day such as water or a functional herbal tea which could be based on centella, blackcurrant, pineapple, birch and fennel, all plants renowned for their effectiveness in counteracting water retention and capillary fragility. If you also added the natural red vine extract, it would have a protective effect on the blood vessels.
-
eat healthy,
favoring fruits and vegetables. Hippocrates held that food should be our medicine. Fruits such as blueberries, currants and black grapes are rich in anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that act on the walls of the capillary vessels, reinforcing and protecting against the risk that they may break or dilate. Currants, in particular, are useful for relieving swelling and heaviness. Vitamin C also helps counteract inflammation of the vessels and improves blood circulation. In this sense, they recommend citrus fruits, tomatoes and kiwis.
-
Stop the snacks,
because refined and preserved foods such as canned ones, stock cubes, cured meats and aged cheeses and various sweets are not good for you. Pay attention to excess salt , coffee and alcohol which facilitate dehydration thus favoring water retention.
-
Do you practice any sport,
because regular physical activity , which can be moderate but constant, such as a brisk walk even for half an hour every day, is useful for decreasing superficial venous pressure and facilitating drainage.
-
Sleep in the correct position,
placing a pillow under your legs when you rest.
-
Avoid heels
the higher they are, the more likely it is that muscle imbalances will occur while you walk, causing your toe joints and leg muscles to work too hard.
-
Use graduated compression stockings
which help blood circulation and the reabsorption of liquids.
-
Take salt baths
to relax the joints for about ten minutes at least a couple of times a week, using rosemary , an aromatic herb which, as Charlemagne said, has a thousand virtues.
-
See therapists
choosing the best professionals to perform at least one massage a week , trying at home, in the evening after a shower or bath for at least a quarter of an hour, to massage your legs alone with a refreshing cream or a draining oil, starting from ankles and reaching up to the thighs, trying to apply a little pressure with the fingertips.
There are many diseases associated with swollen legs. By way of non-exhaustive example, we list some of them: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, knee bursitis, varicose veins, venous thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, etc. and certainly the more commonly known " cellulite ".
If swollen legs are not the result of a disease, they can certainly be the cause of a wrong lifestyle : many people spend most of the day sitting in chairs with sharp edges or sit without leaning back properly: in this way, the veins, tendons and muscles that are "crushed" on the edge of the chair are unable to carry out their task correctly with the consequence of causing pins and needles, heavy feet and swelling. It could also happen that you have to stand for many hours during the day: just think of the bartenders or shop assistants whose lower limbs are affected by circulatory fatigue at the end of the day.
